Free Write

So my topic for this assignment is Wal-Mart, and how Wal-Mart is killing America by exporting jobs to other countries such as china where labor is cheap and importing cheaper goods essentially driving out small retailers and other small businesses. They have monopolized the retail industry and create situations for American factories in which they are destined to fail. Wal-Mart uses tactics much like a drug dealer would. They create a relationship with companies and within a few years that company now depends on Wal-Mart and must bend to the rules they set or go bankrupt due to the loss of sales. So my thesis for this topic is Wal-Mart brings harm to America by exporting jobs overseas, driving small businesses out of business and by trampling all over our labor laws with no consequence.
Some sources I have found are novels, movies and many newspaper articles about Wal-Mart. I’ve found a book online that I have purchased called How Wal-Mart is Destroying America(and the world). Also, I will reference the movie The High Cost of Low Price, which goes into detail on Wal-Mart’s illegal practices with local Manufacturers. I’ll probably need more articles from online and maybe if I can find an economics professor on campus who has a particular opinion in my favor I can do an interview with him or her.
Some problems I may encounter would be the counter arguments to this topic. Wal-Mart is a very popular retailer and there is sure to be good things they have done for America. I will just have to prove that the bad ways out the good, similar to the robber barons of the early 1900’s where men like Carnegie did terrible things but then donated millions of dollars.

Walmart and technology

Walmart: good or evil? As a college student Walmart is very necessary for my survival. With there low prices and wide variety of items it is an easy choice on where to do my shopping. But, how do they get there prices so low? Ever since the opening of trade with countries like China, Walmart has been bullying smaller manufacturing companies who have come to depend on Walmart's purchases from their country. Their demand for lower prices often drive these businesses into the ground because if they choose not to lower the price then they loose out when Wal-Mart takes their business overseas where the same worker rights don't apply as they do in America. All the while at home avoid laws by claiming rights as if they were one person but face no penalties for laws that normal people must abide by.

The second topic i think might be interesting to research is technology as it relates to communication and society. Is technology really enhancing our quality of life? Or is it something of fictional fantasy where it will be the end of all humanity. I say that technology increases one's quality of life with minimal harm to human society. Society is ever changing and it is in human society to resist change.  So it is only natural for those of the past generations to resist what is coming from technology and what will keep coming.  Due to technology people are living longer, we can no communicate across the entire globe in a matter of seconds, and people are becoming more aware of what is going on outside of their bubble. The use of technology is bringing about a globalization where we as the human race will no longer be divided by culture and color and speech but eventually be one unit living in harmony.

Any thoughts?

THESIS: The use of pathos, ethos, and logos tie together the message of a united fight against poverty by attacking people’s sense of ethics, logical thought process and emotions in our current situation as a nation..

Through the media's tricks and the fashion industries cash they have led us to believe that we are never good enough. That there is always something wrong with us and no matter what we do we can never achieve that utter perfection that they have led us to perceive. Through the use of rhetoric they have altered our perception to one that benefits them. But does the beauty industry really benefit us in anyway? Or does it evoke us to essentially kill our bodies by trying to be as skinny as we can be, or kill your body with products harmful to ones health. Dove’s advertising campaign attempted to break this trend and ultimately change the face of beauty industry, as we know it by expanding the narrow idea of “beauty” to include all they could promote a healthier image and change the perception of women.
They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder but why is it that we allow beauty to be defined by the media? Dove’s overall idea for its campaign was to show how there were a wide range of beauty and not just one narrow minded version of being beautiful. The media and beauty industry has people so controlled where they can constantly change the image of beauty to suit their financial gain. We see it in fashion how one color is in one month and out the next because if left stagnant no profits would be made. They back up these changes through use of rhetoric in their advertising so in return what dove intended to do was to use rhetoric in the same way and change the perception of women and beauty. By using ethos they could gain their trust then with pathos appeal to their feelings and then finally use logos to make them understand that by be being healthy you will feel better about yourself. Once the stigma is broken it will become way of life because that is how people work. If you can get them to do something and break through to them and change them it eventually begins the norm and this is what dove attempted to do. Create a new norm of a healthy image and change how the masses perceived beauty.
